Call of Duty 3 was different from others was the fact that it didn’t show the soldier as a lone hero, but it made you experience the chaos of a massive offensive, the Normandy Breakout. The gameplay is all about the player’s intense and overwhelming experience with all his senses; thus, you are in the trenches directly. In contrast to the previous ones, it has brought the “struggle” system, a new concept of close-quarters fight, where all of a sudden, the enemies would wrestle with you. You have to do a fast button-mashing battle to end it with the one who survives in the shell craters.

War’s disarray was taken a step further with the game’s ambient struggle, which was revolutionary at the time: tanks were going through hedgerows; artillery fires were shaking the ground; AI soldiers were engaging in dynamic firefights which were totally independent of what you were doing, thus the feeling of being just one soldier out of a vast, endless war machine being created.

Adding to this were the daring, vehicle-focused parts wherein you could be found operating the guns of a jeep in the middle of a high-speed getaway or planning the assaults from the tight and dark interior of a Sherman tank. No matter which force you chose for your fight, be it Americans, British, Canadians, or Poles, every mission, in the end, was meant to lack the sense of a rehearsed level and, instead, to be experienced as an earthy, living, and very harsh battle where the brave had to struggle only to survive.
